Project Overview

A retired couple wanted to engage with passers-by whilst maintaining a degree of privacy and space. It was inspired by the restrictions placed upon us by the spread of the covid virus. They wanted to maintain the ability to interact from within their garden safely. They liked the look of a mediterranean and rain garden but wished to retain the large Magnolia. What emerged from the concept for storytelling was an amphitheatre section as a sunken garden shaded by trees and a car parking space with bespoke limestone scrolls. Also, as a nod to Grimm's fairytales a hedge oriel views a seemingly overgrown white-stemmed Bramble, alluding to a sleeping beauty hidden within. There is a large glass cuboid water feature to reduce the sound of traffic adjacent a nearby arbour within which they could relax. This design solves the contradiction between the desire to engage publicly and the desire to maintain privacy in a relatively small space.
