Project Overview

The client wanted vegetable and wildlife areas, to retain some lawn and shrubs and liked the colours violet and purple. However, her desire to attract wildlife was seemingly incompatible with her being a cat owner. This was solved by deepening the pond and adding taller grasses to give places of refuge for the frogs and other animals brought to the garden. An existing Amalanchier graced the far end of the garden on a sunny terrace with a straight path down the middle in an otherwise featureless and waterlogged lawn. Due to access through the house only, the old path of crazy paving was reused to swirl between new planting and round lawns. The whole garden was raised 10cm to allow for drainage with a small pond collecting rainwater from the house. Fast growing trees such as contorted willow and Rhus were used to shade the wildlife of the pond, alongside which tall grasses were placed.
